Having been sent a sneak preview of Liminality by poet Danny Gray. I must confess to having already returned to it numerous times. It is that kind of book.
The clever and very relatable subjects are further enhanced by Danny’s often playful rhyming schemes and witty prose. ‘Words #2’ and ‘Words #3’ are great examples of this and showcase just how much Danny loves the very vehicles of his work.
I can see poems such as ‘Things I Don’t Miss…’ being hugely popular with a readership whose fondness, or otherwise, will have the items listed debated long after it's been absorbed. It is a poem that simply connects… whether you agree with elements therein or not… it hooks you in.
Whilst Danny’s natural humour is peppered throughout the book, it would be fair to say the poems within Liminality cover a myriad of emotions. My favourite is the powerful ‘2017’ - the agonies of which resonated strongly and I must confess it is a poem I would like to have written myself. It’s an incredible piece of work.
The rhythm of the poetry is possibly his strongest to date and these poems deserve to be heard in a stage setting. But, if you like your poetry as a secular and quiet pastime and like to allow yourself to savour the words and the images and the emotions that are plucked from around the poems at your leisure… either way… you’ll be left wanting more.
